Frequently
Asked Questions (and Answers!)
Q.
What are the functions of SCADDS/RC-Footing Designer?
A.
SCADDS/RC-Footing Designer is meant for Limit State design
of masonry wall or concrete wall footings, Isolated Rectangular or Circular
Footings and Combined Rectangular or Trapezoidal Footings subjected
to Axial Load and bending as per IS:456. You also have a choice of providing
a pedestal for Isolated or Combined Footings. Moreover, the footing
section can be flat or sloped in case of Wall footings or Isolated footings.
Q.
If a pedestal is assumed, will the design be done automatically?
A.
Yes. If you assume a pedestal and specify the pedestal projection from
the column face, SCADDS/RC-Footing Designer will design the dowel bars
and also check for bearing stresses as per IS:456. Moreover, the depth
of pedestal will also be optimized in order to save the volume of concrete
for the whole footing.
Q.
Is shear design for stirrups included in SCADDS/RC-Footing Designer?
A.
No. It is not a common practice to provide stirrups in footings. But
SCADDS/RC-Footing Designer carries out detailed shear calculations for
one-way shear and punching shear.
Q.
Is the design interactive in nature?
A.
Yes. In fact, you can choose from four methods for proportioning the
length and width of the footing. During the solution phase, you will
be prompted to provide your own values for the length and width against
the required values shown.
Q.
Will SCADDS/RC-Footing Designer arrive at a safe depth automatically?
A.
Yes! If the given thickness or depth of footing is inadequate, the section
will be revised automatically in order to give you a section which is
safe in flexure and shear.
Q.
Does it design eccentric footings or "shoe" footings?
A.
No. The present version does not design footings which have eccentric
columns. However, you can design footings with combined axial load and
uniaxial or biaxial bending maintaining a symmetrical geometry. Please
note that the next upgrade will include design of isolated footings
which have unsymmetrical geometry.
Q.
What is the input required to be given for designing a footing?
A.
The type and shape of the footing, dimensions, Concrete Grade (either
standard or user-designed mix), steel grades & rod sizes and the working
forces and moments.
Q.
What is the output produced by SCADDS/RC-Footing Designer?
A.
The output for a design problem contains detailed reports on design
for flexure, design for pedestal (if provided), check for one-way shear,
check for punching shear and design for bond. (Top)
