Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers!)

Q. What are the functions of SCADDS/RC-Column Designer?

A. SCADDS/RC-Column Designer is meant for Limit State design of Short or Long Rectangular, Square or Circular column sections subjected to Axial Load, Uniaxial or Biaxial Bending, with the choices of steel being provided along two sides or four sides, for columns bent in single or double curvature along single or both axes or combinations thereof. There exist over 100 combinations of the above parameters, if one carefully studies IS:456 and it is a well known fact that no design tables or ready made charts are developed to cater for all these combinations.

For instance, consider a long column subjected to axial load and biaxial bending. Let us assume that the column is bent in single curvature about the X-axis and is bent in double curvature about the Y-axis. Let us also assume that while the column is long about the X-axis, it is short about the Y-axis. Let the axial load be smaller in magnitude compared to the moments in order to make the neutral axis shift outside the column section. The design of the section will be quite complex and this will have to be solved combining the various clauses from IS:456-2000 and the stress block parameters.

With SCADDS/RC-Column Designer, the above task is done just within seconds! Such situations are very common for industrial structures, through not very common for typical residential apartments.

Q. Can SCADDS/RC-Column Designer consider the situation wherein two moments (Mx1 & My1) are acting at the top while two other moments (Mx2 and My2) are acting at the bottom, in addition to the axial load?

A. Yes, of course! These moments can also be negative or positive giving rise to situations of single curvature or double curvature.

Q. Will it design Spiral Ties in addition to standard lateral ties?

A. Yes. In case of circular sections, you have the choice of providing either spiral ties or standard lateral ties.

Q. What is the input required to be given for designing a column section?

A. The effective heights of the column about X and Y axes, shape of the column section, dimensions for the section, Concrete Grade (either standard or user-designed mix), steel grades & rod sizes and the working forces and moments. The entire input can be done within a matter of 3 to 4 minutes, thanks to ultra user-friendly interface and data input dialog boxes.

Q. What is the output produced by SCADDS/RC-Column Designer?

A. The output for a design problem contains detailed reports on design for flexure, calculation of slenderness and eccentricities with revised bending moments, design for ties and design for bond. (Top)
