Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers!)

Q. What are the functions of SCADDS/RC-Beam Designer?

A. SCADDS/RC-Beam Designer is meant for Limit State design of Singly or Doubly reinforced Rectangular, Tee or Ell beam sections subjected to moment, shear and torsion. There exist over 36 combinations of the above parameters, if one carefully studies IS:456 and it is a well known fact that no design tables or ready made charts are developed to cater for all these 36 combinations.

For instance, consider a Tee beam having a thin flange with a comparatively deeper web subjected moment, shear and torsion. Let us assume that the moment is heavy in order to make the section doubly reinforced. Let us also assume that the Neutral Axis lies in the web and not in the flange. Also considering the inclusion of Torsion, the design of the section will be quite complex and this will have to be solved combining the various clauses from IS:456 and the stress block parameters.

With SCADDS/RC-Beam Designer, the above task is done just within seconds! Such situations are very common for industrial structures, through not very common for typical residential apartments.

Q. Will SCADDS/RC-Beam Designer design a doubly reinforced section automatically?

A. Yes, of course! Depending on the Moment and Torsion (if present), the section will be automatically designed as a doubly reinforced section. Therefore, you do not have to choose whether the section has to be singly reinforced or doubly reinforced.

Q. Will it also design side-face or skin reinforcement?

A. Yes. Side-face or skin reinforcement will be designed automatically based on the depth of the section and the presence of Torsion, if any.

Q. What is the input required to be given for designing a beam section?

A. The effective span of the beam, shape of the beam section (Rectangular, Tee or Ell), dimensions for the section, Concrete Grade (either standard or user-designed mix), steel grades & rod sizes and the working forces. The entire input can be done within a matter of 3 to 4 minutes, thanks to ultra user-friendly interface and data input dialog boxes.

Q. What is the output produced by SCADDS/RC-Beam Designer?

A. The output for a design problem contains detailed reports on design for flexure, design for shear, design for bond, design for side-face or skin reinforcement, check for deflection, check for slender beam and check for deep beam. (Top)
